Hand Hewn Beams

Historic Reclaimed Wood Beams

At our Paso Robles lumber yard, American Barnwood offers a broad selection of historic reclaimed wood beams sourced from Midwestern barns in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. These beams once formed the structural framework of barns built in the 1800s and early 1900s, and each carries the character and craftsmanship of its era.

We stock both hand-hewn and rough-sawn reclaimed beams.

  • Hand-hewn beams, shaped by hand with broad axes and adzes, display visible tool marks and rustic texture. Most predate 1890, reflecting traditional craftsmanship that can only be achieved by hand.
  • Rough-sawn beams feature the saw marks of early lumber mills. Depending on when a mill was available, these beams may date from before or after 1890, offering a slightly more uniform appearance while retaining authentic age and patina.

Over decades of use, each beam has developed its own surface texture, wear patterns, and natural coloration–details that add warmth and a one-of-a-kind presence to any space. Reclaimed barn beams complement a wide range of design styles, including Farmhouse, Modern, Rustic, Old World, French Country, and Spanish Hacienda.

American Barnwood beams are well suited for fireplace mantels, ceiling beams, pergolas, furniture, and architectural features. We carry beams in a wide range of sizes, with lengths from 2 feet up to 45 feet, making them suitable for both decorative and large-scale projects.
