General Sizing Tips
- Most mantels fall between 6–12″ deep.
- Mounting height typically ranges from 52–62″ depending on ceiling height.
- Make mantel height greater than half of its depth dimension for proper proportions.
Safety Reminder
- Wood mantels must meet minimum clearance requirements above the firebox.
- Larger or deeper mantels may require additional vertical spacing.
- Always confirm clearances with your contractor, fireplace manufacturer and local code.
Mantel Length Considerations
- Mantel length should typically be at least 6–12″ wider than the firebox opening.
- For a surround, mantels often extend 3–6″ past each side for balanced framing.
- In larger rooms, extending the mantel wider can visually anchor the fireplace wall.
